Automatic Weapons of the World

about

This track brings back vivid memories of one of my first research jobs post University. I was hired to do weapon research for a film about the Donnelly family for a Buffalo Gal Pictures production. It was in 1998/1999 - the early days of "remote" work and I remember somehow getting this job over the phone (!?) and then corresponding by email/phone. I never got to meet my colleagues in person and never got to see the final film (nor do I know if any of my work wove its way into the film/tv show) but while reading this ole tome in the Toronto Reference Library quite literally entitled "Automatic Weapons of the World" (1945) I came across what I found to be a poetic passage that I transformed into the chorus of this ska-surf song.

Please note this song was meant to be a light piece about a bank robber who openly fetishizes weaponry.

On the analog reel-to-reel album "Hosemusik" (thanks Fembots!) we revisit this song and it features trombone by Evan Cranley (Stars, Broken Social Scene).

lyrics

I was picking it up and I was putting it down
the Heckler & Koch P7 M8 Pistol
I was planning it up and I was planning it sound
The S Credit Union on the southside of town
But my weapon of choice did not make enough noise
so I ordered it up a Walther P88
Made in Germany an operation lock breech with a 9x19 mm

Beware of the surf when you're landing on the beach
It is the sand boiling up on the surf
which is bad for your weapon not the pure salt water
Beware of the surf when you're landing on the beach
It is the sand boiling up on the surf
which is bad for your weapon not the pure salt water

When I knew it was time I got out of line
I made the rounds of the place with my best sweetie pie face
I left my Walther at home as well as my HK
Cause I had wanted to bring my new Glock17
It's an Austrian brand that holds 17 rounds
and the receiver is a high impact polymer base
The plastic pistol looks fake - that's why I pack it in pink
We'll give them all a shock at the credit...

Beware of the surf when you're landing on the beach
It is the sand boiling up on the surf
which is bad for your weapon not the pure salt water
Beware of the surf when you're landing on the beach
It is the sand boiling up on the surf
which is bad for your weapon not the pure salt water

I was picking it up and I was putting it down
the Heckler & Koch P7 M8 Pistol
I was planning it up and I was planning it sound
The S Credit Union on the southside of town
But my weapon of choice did not make enough noise
so I ordered it up a Walther P88
Made in Germany an operation lock breech with a 9x19 mm
