about

While listening to and typing out the lyrics to this one I just got misty-eyed. I've never spoken publicly about this song but it is both the story of my own food allergies - I grew up on Ontario peaches and then in my early 20's bit into one and my face swelled up/had difficulty breathing - and that of musician/performer Joe Chithalen who passed away while on tour (he had a severe peanut allergy and ate something that had trace amounts). I'd seen him in the Rocky Horror Picture Show musical at the Grand Theatre and on many occasions with his various bands (The Mahones, Wild Blues Yonder) and his death struck me. What a fine line those with such extreme sensitivities walk.

lyrics

I once was a girl who used to eat all that I pleased
yes I would breeze through the freezer
munching fruits, veggies and peas
And where did I go?
I wasn't walking I was rowing
down with styx water flow
and you could eat anything that was growing...

Then I ate a peach far beyond reach
traveled I went
and you were standing below saying "don't go"
I didn't know...
And where did I go?
I wasn't walking I was rowing
down with styx water flow
and you could eat anything that was growing...

You were once a boy who used to laugh, giggle and dream
then you went to a faraway land
because you trusted the word of one man
And where did you go?
You weren't walking you were rowing
down with styx water flow
and you could eat anything that was growing

Now we've come to the production field
where we can grow anything we feel is unreal
oh Annaphylaxthis yes Anna relax
on Annaphylaxthis yes Anna relax
