In March 2019 I woke up living on the side of a mountain – namely the Stoney Nakoda’s “Sacred Buffalo Guardian.” I’d been making music for decades but as the years zipped by band mates moved on to other cities – countries – jobs - and I found myself, out of necessity, playing solo, often recording in a hermit-like fashion editing and chopping things and mixing songs over the course of days - weeks - months.

How did this mountain music making happen? Howard Bilerman (Hotel2Tango) told me about the "Singer Songwriter Program" at Banff Centre for the Arts and it seemed like the perfect place for synergy and the potential for collaborative songwriting, workshopping, recording etc. It was!

Part of the program includes a 4-hour recording session in their studio with engineers-in-training and session musicians.

On the morning of March 15th, 2019 I awoke early and quietly walked down to the studio where my 9am-1pm session would unfold. Excited, nervous - chord charts and lyrics in hand - I had no idea what to expect. I’d never played these songs with these musicians before – and had only vague ideas of instrumentation or arrangement. So I took a deep breath and stepped into the studio buzzing with people, cables, microphones - all sorts of energy from the sessions before and the ones to come. Time to play!

What you’re hearing is the result of those 4 hours LIVE off the floor (with a few overdubs – harmonies, claps, guitar solo) in order of recording. Funny note about Beautiful Trap...I liked the song but it had been a misfit in my stack of songs for YEARS...we only had about 30 minutes left in the session and we started playing it with me on the uke and I was all "bleh! I don't like it!" about halfway in and Howard suggested I try it on the piano and BOOM there it went! What you hear is what transpired in a matter of minutes. :)

Thanks so much to everyone who was involved with this project! You all contributed so much to the final sound. A real synthesis of talent and energy and a real pleasure to collaborate with folks outside my hermit lair. Hope to do it again one day.
